Five State Championships Net RHSM All-Sports Award
For the first time in school history, Rowland Hall-St. Mark's School won a Deseret News All-Sports award. The 29th annual Deseret News All-Sports award recognizes the top overall athletic programs in each of the five classifications.
Schools earn All-Sports points for placing in the top eight positions at state. Ten points are awarded for first, eight for second, six for third, five for fourth, four for fifth, three for sixth, two for seventh and one for eighth. Points are divided when teams tie. Teams earn points in football, cross country, golf, basketball, wrestling, swimming, baseball, track, soccer, tennis, volleyball and softball. This year, girls' golf was added to the list.
In CLASS 2A, Rowland Hall-St. Mark's won five state titles, including two in the spring, to finish with 57.5 points for its first All-Sports title. The Winged Lions narrowly edged three schools, including last year's top school Millard (56), along with Parowan (55) and Richfield (55). Skyline, Timpview, Judge and St. Joseph also won all-sports titles in their respective classification. Brighton, which finished third this year in 5A, holds the record with 11 consecutive awards from 1980-1991. Juan Diego holds the record for most awards points in a season with 112. Judge Memorial Catholic High School also won five state titles in Class 3A.
Congratulations to RHSM coaches and athletes on this outstanding accomplishment!

Dear Parents It has been an amazing year of achievements and successes for our students in terms of awards, test scores, and college acceptances. But, as most of you know, the best measure of success for me is how the students feel about attending the school. At our final chapel celebration in the Upper School, senior Hanna Saltzman talked about what made the school special for her. Though this was written for her peers in the upper division, the atmosphere and environment she describes represents what we strive for at every level.
I hope you enjoy reading her speech and I wish you and yours a safe and refreshing summer.

The RHSM Cycling Team Wants You!
The RHSM Cycling Team invites you to join them! It's easy: just sign up, grab your bike, and go! Each year the RHSM Cycling Team rides in the MS150 and other local rides. The MS150 is a two-day, 150-mile bicycle ride that raises money for treatment, research, and support of people living with Multiple Sclerosis. The ride takes place June 28-29, 2008 in the beautiful Cache Valley. Members can select how far to ride each day, as well as committing to raise a minimum of $200 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Adults and children over age 10, willing to raise money and represent RHSM, are welcome. Plus, we have great jerseys! The RHSM team sets up a central camp at the fairgrounds in Logan and members can stop by, hang out, enjoy BBQ, snacks and beverages, and good conversation. Many choose to camp there, stay in a hotel, or commute. Last year's team raised nearly $25,000 and our goal for this year is $35,000! Please help us achieve our goal by joining the team, sponsoring the team, and/or making a donation. Contact Margaret Rose, Lower School Assistant Principal ( margaretrose@rhsm.org) for more information. |
Clarification on RHSM Endowment
In the previous Emarker, you may have read the article titled, "Supporting the Auction = Supporting the Endowment". In it, we urged the need to increase RHSM's endowment, in part via the upcoming auction proceeds. We stated that typically, schools such as ours are wise to have 10% of their operating budget derived from endowment funds. For the fiscally observant, that would mean RHSM would currently need a $40m endowment. Our current endowment hovers at $3.3m thus we have an opportunity ahead of us! With your important support, over the next four years, we aim to increase our endowment to $16m (nearly half way to that $40m!) A larger endowment at RHSM would help ensure educational opportunities for all of our children, further ensure a diverse community and most importantly, ensure that our teachers are equitably paid. Can anyone argue with that?

Thank You Home and School Volunteers!
RHSM Home and School Association thanks the many volunteers who so generously gave of their time this year in the classrooms, at performances, meetings, presentations, school or sporting events. Without you, RHSM would not be the wonderful community that it is for all our children. Thanks for a wonderful year!
We wish you and your family a safe and restful summer,
Leslie Stone and AnnMarie Hannon

Budding Scientists In Kindergarten
We are keeping alive the inborn sense of wonder in kindergarten! The children are given the opportunity to explore, observe and experience the sense of excitement when making new discoveries.
One example of this inquiry-based approach to science occurred during a study of fish in Katie and Linda's kindergarten class. First the children were challenged to determine what was needed in a fish habitat, and then they became actively engaged in creating a safe environment for our fish visitors. They were then given the appropriate tools (fish!) and began exploring! Through watching, we disproved many of our early assumptions about fish. Some thought that fish only eat fish food so we tested a variety of foods and formed new conclusions. We assumed that fish open their mouth all of the time (like we see on television) only to find that over a one minute period, the Beta fish only opened his mouth one time (but 32 times when being fed!), at the time of publication, we were collectively searching for an answer to the question, "Do Beta fish have tongues?"
Our conclusions have not come from books or from expert scientists, they have all come from our ability as young children to stop, ask questions, and take time to observe our world with an open mind!

SOS Wants the Shirt Off Your Back!
What will you do with all of those out-grown RHSM logo shirts stacking up in your closets? You know, the middle school uniform shirts, P.E. uniform shirts with your child's name on them, sweatshirts, class trip shirts, athletic team shirts, etc. RHSM logo shirts should be worn only by RHSM students, teachers, and alumni, so they shouldn't ever be donated locally.
"Share Our Shirts" is a project created by RHSM seventh-grader, Kiersten Cutler, to make good use of all gently-used uniform shirts and logo shirts. All donated shirts will go to an organization Liz Paige helped locate called Koins for Kenya ( www.koinsforkenya.com). Koins for Kenya is a non-profit organization from Utah that works to build schools in remote villages in Kenya. Koins is thrilled to be partnered with Kiersten's project, and to designate our donated RHSM shirts as uniform shirts in their Kenyan schools. Koins for Kenya shipped a container of supplies, including our shirts, to Kenya in early June. Collection of the shirts will be on-going throughout the next several school years. Collection bins are located in the Upper School and Middle School Commons areas. Any RHSM shirts are welcome, including Lower School uniform shirts, even though the Lower School shirts have no logos. All we ask is that all shirts are clean and folded when you place them in the bins. Please visit www.shareourshirts.com for more information about this project. Thank you very much to all who have already dropped off shirts in the collection bins. And remember to save those shirts over the summer to place in the collection bins next fall! |

Shimada Named All-Region
Alexis Shimada, pitcher/shortstop for the RHSM softball team, was named to the Region 14 All-Region team. Her name was inadvertently left off the list of All-Region honorees in the last edition of the Emarker. Our apologies and congratulations to Alexis!

Track Team Presents Coach with Sustainable Gift
by Mark Oftedal, Track and Cross Country Coach
The inaugural track season at Rowland Hall-St. Mark's School came to a close last Friday with an Awards Picnic in Millcreek Canyon. The athletes and parents presented me with a gift that I would like to tell those reading the E-Marker about. Even though I try to keep our travel to a minimum, our team still traveled over 1000 miles this season. This mileage included short little jaunts to East High's track with my '88 Honda (still nearly 40 mpg) carrying starting blocks, water bottles, the first aid kit, and the trunk lid tied down over protruding, rattling hurdles. Also put to use was one of RHSM's gray, eight-passenger vans, taking a small number of runners to a meet, and then the stately Le Bus rolling along the highway to destinations like Manti, Morgan and Kamas. I'm quite proud of our school's proactive, progressive "no idling" policy as it does send a strong message to others. It is not uncommon to step off the bus at a track or cross-country venue and be greeted by the exhaust of dozens of idling buses. The steps RHSM is taking in regards to the environment is commendable and now what the track team has done takes us further along that path. What our track athletes and parents did to honor me for my coaching this season was to offset the impact our team had on the planet by purchasing renewable energy credits through the University of Utah's renewable energy program. The gift will provide 45 MWh of pollution-free wind energy to the western US grid, thereby avoiding the emission of over 30 tons of CO2. Not only does this contribution offset our team's travel, it will also offset the track team members' use of electricity and natural gas use at RHSM for one year! Now if you are a RHSM 4th grader and you're reading this you might say, "Hey Upper School Track Team that's great, but do you have any idea what we've been up to here at the Lower School?" When contacting Chris Hill, a professor in the department of Biochemistry, about the University of Utah's renewable energy program, I learned that the 4th grade is very involved in reducing their environmental impact. This year they funded renewable electricity for the grid equal to more than twice the total electricity that they use at school. You can see details at http://windpower.utah.edu. The campaign is still active and anyone who is looking for a highly cost effective way to fund wind energy and offset their carbon footprint can contribute. Just over $3/year makes one student's share of school electricity come entirely from wind sources and $30/year funds wind energy equal to the annual usage of a typical US household. Okay 2009 track team, the bar has been raised. I wish to send out a heart-felt thank you to the 2008 RHSM track team: Wynne Connelly, Alec Darr, Alexander Edgley, Ben Florsheim, Jacob Fuhrman, Jackson Hannon, Taylor Hollen, Chloe Joesten, Zoey Martin-Lockhart, Aaron Phillips, Max Sharp and their families for this extremely thoughtful expression of gratitude. For more information about the University of Utah's wind program please contact Chris Hill ( chris@biochem.utah.edu).
